Fishing in the Maldives is an exciting and rewarding experience due to the abundance of fish in its waters. If you’re lucky, you won’t need to wait for long: when the fish are biting, you'll often only need to cast your line, lower it to the right depth, and wait a few minutes for a catch. While there are occasional quiet days, it's rare that you won't catch anything.
To ensure a successful catch, cast your line to a depth of 1.5 to 2 meters from the bottom. The process is simple: when the line stops unwinding and rests on the water’s surface, it means the sinker has reached the sea floor. Then, reel the line back in until you feel tension, indicating that the weight is lifting from the bottom. Once you feel the pull, turn the reel a few times (usually 5 to 10 times, as suggested by your guide), and then wait for a bite!
If the hook gets caught on coral, the line will tighten and stop unwinding. In that case, ask your guide for help to free the hook and replace the bait.
As a bonus, the fish you catch can often be grilled for you that evening. Be sure to arrange this with the tour organizers in advance, preferably earlier in the day, to ensure the freshest experience.
Enjoy your fishing trip, and may you have a great catch!
