Kendhoo

Kendhoo Island is located in the picturesque northern part of the Baa Atoll (declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2011), renowned for its rich underwater world, vibrant coral diversity, and spots where large groups of manta rays gather from May to November — during this period, whale sharks can occasionally be seen in the southern part of Baa as well.

Kendhoo is a small, well-kept island, whose residents are always happy to offer warmth and hospitality. The island has a few shops and cafés, as well as a watersports center where visitors can rent jet skis, ride a banana boat, try wakeboarding, kite- or windsurfing, or learn waterskiing. The locals are mainly engaged in fishing and coconut thatch weaving, which is used to make traditional Maldivian-style roofs. Tourism on Kendhoo is relatively recent — there are only a few guesthouses on the island — but it is steadily developing as a tourist destination.

Near Kendhoo, there are five uninhabited islands lined up in a neat row, forming a small archipelago often featured on postcards and travel brochures about the Maldives. Most of these islands can be reached on excursions from Kendhoo, making it possible to enjoy a picnic, explore pristine nature, and discover the rich local reefs.

The island’s tourist beach is small but cozy, and the locals take care to keep it clean and well-maintained. Snorkeling enthusiasts will especially appreciate Kendhoo’s home reef, teeming with diverse marine life and colorful corals, easily accessible for a swim straight from the shore.
